A word of advice on selling your old gold.

Everywhere you turn, you see ads for companies wanting to but your old gold. Funny thing is, every one of them claim to pay the highest prices. How can that be?

Recent investigative journalism articles by Florida Trend Magazine, ABC News and the Nationally syndicated Clark Howard show all agree that independent retail jewelers are likely to pay you the highest amount for you unwanted, used gold.

The absolute worst place you can sell these items is the TV advertised mail in sites. According to the June issue of Florida Trend Magazine, Cash 4 Gold, the Television mega site for disposing of your old gold, pays as little as 20 cents on the dollar. The second worst place is a company that comes into town, takes out full page ads and sets up in a hotel room. These operations will always pay less in order to pay for their full page, color advertisements.

While no one will pay you 100% for your old gold, retail independent jewelers will always pay more, since they can reuse a lot of the gold in their manufacturing and repair facility.

My suggestion to you is this: Before you sell your old gold, pick up your phone and call several places that advertise buying your old gold and simply ask them how much they are paying for a gram or a pennyweight (it won’t matter which unit you use as long as you consistently use the same for each call) of 14K gold. If they refuse to give you an answer, cross them off your list of possible places you will sell your gold. If they don’t want to give you a number, it’s because they are paying low and want you to come into their place of business. A word of caution; The price of gold changes every five minutes, so make sure that you make all of your calls in a relatively short period of time, say, the same ½ day. At this point, you should have a pretty good idea of who is paying the highest prices and, quite simply, that is where you should sell your gold!
